The End of Direct Game Server IP Connections

During the early days of competitive gaming, players connected directly to the public IP address of dedicated game servers. If a server or player IP was leaked, opponents could launch denial-of-service floods to disrupt the match. To eradicate this vulnerability across Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2, Valve engineered Steam Datagram Relay (SDR).

How SDR Encapsulates & Shields Player Traffic

When you join an official Valve matchmaking server:

  • No Direct Server IP: Your game client does not know the true IP address of the match server hosting the game.
  • Nearest SDR Relay Hop: Your PC sends encrypted UDP packets to the closest Valve SDR edge point of presence (POP) in your city or region.
  • Private Backbone Routing: Traffic travels across Valve private dedicated fiber network directly to the game server datacenter, bypassing public internet routing bottlenecks and DDoS threats.
  • Zero Player-to-Player Exposure: Opponents in the match only see their own local SDR relay connection, making IP sniffing impossible.

Diagnosing SDR Routing in the Developer Console

Open the developer console in CS2 (~) and type status or net_status to view your active SDR connection, showing your ping to the edge relay and the internal backbone route.
