In competitive console shooters like Rainbow Six Siege, using a mouse and keyboard provides an immense precision advantage over analog thumbsticks. Because consoles do not natively allow mouse input in competitive matches, dishonest players rely on hardware spoofing adapters (such as XIM Matrix, Cronus Zen, or ReaSnow).
These devices translate digital mouse movements into fake analog joystick signals, tricking the console into believing a standard controller is connected.
How MouseTrap Detects Spoofed Hardware Heuristically
Ubisoft introduced MouseTrap, an advanced behavioral analysis engine that detects mouse translation adapters without requiring kernel root access to the console hardware:
- Analog vs Digital Vector Analysis: True analog thumbsticks produce continuous curved acceleration arcs (0% to 100% tilt). A mouse converted to joystick commands produces unnatural instant 100% velocity snaps and 8-directional WASD staircase patterns.
- Micro-Movement Heuristics: Mouse sensors make tiny jitter adjustments that are physically impossible to replicate on a physical thumbstick potentiometer.
- Gradual Input Lag Penalty: Instead of an instant ban, MouseTrap adds progressive input latency (up to 300ms delay) to the player crosshair, rendering the mouse completely unresponsive until a genuine controller is connected.
