The Fast-Paced Arena of Solana Maximal Extractable Value (MEV)

With sub-second block times and explosive memecoin volume on Raydium, Meteora, and Pump.fun, Solana became a prime battleground for MEV Searchers and Sandwich Bots. Swapping tokens with high slippage settings often results in traders receiving significantly fewer tokens than anticipated.

The Anatomy of a Solana Sandwich Attack

  1. Mempool / Gossip Listening: MEV bots monitor public RPC transaction queues for large pending buy swaps with loose slippage tolerance (e.g., 5% to 15%).
  2. The Front-Run Buy: The bot submits a buy transaction with higher priority fees directly before the victim, driving the token price up.
  3. The Victim Trade Executes: The victim swap executes at the highest allowable slippage boundary.
  4. The Back-Run Sell: The bot sells its tokens in the same block, capturing pure profit at the victim expense.

Shielding Swaps Using Jito Private Bundles

To eliminate sandwiching, the Jito-Solana client created an atomic private transaction bundle mechanism:

  • Direct-to-Validator Relaying: Transactions are routed privately to Jito-enabled validator nodes rather than broadcast across the public gossip mesh.
  • Atomic All-or-Nothing Execution: A Jito bundle executes entirely or reverts completely, making third-party frontrunning mathematically impossible.
  • Configuring Private RPCs: Use trading terminals (e.g., Photon, BullX) with Jito MEV Protection and automated tipping enabled.
